2012's Bands, Brew & BBQ will be twice as fun when the park hosts rockin' concerts Saturdays AND Sundays this year, on Feb. 11-12, 18-19, 25-26, and March 3-4. SeaWorld partners with favorite local restaurants to bring an even richer variety of BBQ and great grilled food. There's a thirst-quenching beer garden featuring nearly 50 craft beers from around 20 different domestic and international breweries. And of course, incredible concerts with top artists in classic rock and country music. Bands, Brew & BBQ is included with park admission.

Epcot -- Epcot's "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" features a salute to the new year at 7 p.m. and 11:42 p.m. The park's December 31 operating hours are 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Disney's Hollywood Studios features "Fantasmic!" at 6:30 and 8 p.m., with the popular "Lights! Camera! Happy New Year!" fireworks display at midnight. Park hours: 8 a.m.-12 a.m.

Magic Kingdom will host the "Wishes" nighttime spectacular with a holiday overlay at 8:30 p.m. and "Fantasy in the Sky" at 11:51 p.m. Park Hours: 8 a.m.-2 a.m.

Disney's Animal Kingdom: No fireworks. "Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade" at 3:45 p.m.; Park Hours: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Jaws at Universal Orlando will be closing.

Every time I went to Universal Studios Orlando, Jaws was always on the list to ride. I remember the first time taking my sons on that ride and thier amazement at the giant shark attacking the boat. The heat from the explosions only amplified that this has to be real. No fake flames on this ride.

Jaws, will close permanently on Jan. 2, 2012 to make way for a new attraction, Universal Orlando announced Friday.

The ride, based on the 1975 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, was one of the original attractions in Universal Studios when the park opened in 1990.

The Amity-themed area surrounding the attraction, named after the fictional resort island in the movie, will also be closed "to make room for what will be an exciting new attraction experience," Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said."We've got a couple of things planned to ensure we always remember and honor" Jaws," Universal said.

New attractions sure to top Orlando’s “must-see” list for 2012 and 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. -- With three astounding new attractions featuring all-new ways to connect guests to the mysteries of the sea, SeaWorld Orlando and Discovery Cove are once again sure to top the “must-see” list for upcoming Orlando vacations.

The new attractions represent the biggest attraction expansions in the history of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, the parks’ parent company.

Terry Prather, president of the company’s Orlando parks, SeaWorld, Discovery Cove and Aquatica, said, “With TurtleTrek at SeaWorld Orlando and Freshwater Oasis at Discovery Cove, travelers will have all new reasons to visit Orlando. What we’re creating will take you places you’ve never been before, places only SeaWorld can take you.”

TurtleTrek
While creating TurtleTrek (opening at SeaWorld Orlando in spring 2012), designers stayed true to SeaWorld’s unique blend of nose-to-nose animal encounters and state-of-the art entertainment.

Guests first visit two massive naturalistic habitats, one filled with hundreds of freshwater fish and gentle manatees, the other home to more than 1,500 saltwater fish and more than a dozen sea turtles. Many of the manatees and sea turtles were rescued by the park’s animal team. Since SeaWorld Orlando’s rescue programs began, the team has cared for and returned to the wild nearly 240 manatees and more than 1,200 sea turtles.

Moving on from the habitat, guests enter a domed theater, and what happens next has never before been seen and is a first at any theme park in the world.

Coming to life is a first-of-its-kind 3-D/360-degree dome theater film that is completely immersive. The dome allows a hyper-realistic 3-D movie to be shown all around guests and even above them – not just in front them or on only one screen. It’s this unique and immersive way of showcasing a sea turtle’s epic and astounding journey that is the heart of TurtleTrek. And for the first time, SeaWorld guests are given a turtle’s eye view of the ocean’s wonders.

TurtleTrek is as inspirational as it is astounding. There’s a call-to-action at the end of the experience: SeaWorld calls on guests to join them in conserving the world we share. “Do a little, do a lot, but join us and do something to help the world and its animals,” said Brian Morrow, the attraction’s chief designer. “TurtleTrek is about the everyday heroes who can make a difference in nature.”

Freshwater Oasis
Just across the street from SeaWorld Orlando is Discovery Cove, a limited-admission, all-inclusive tropical resort where guests swim with dolphins, hand-feed tropical birds in a free-flight aviary, snorkel among thousands of colorful fish and rays and relax on pristine beaches.

Opening at Discovery Cove in spring 2012 is Freshwater Oasis, an all-new attraction featuring swimming and wading adventures and face-to-face encounters with playful otters and curious marmosets.

When guests participate with nature at Discovery Cove, they unlock discoveries that can be life-changing. Freshwater Oasis is an all-new opportunity to wade up-close with wildlife in a relaxing tropical setting. It’s an exhilarating tropical exhale.

Antarctica - Empire of the Penguin
Also announced was SeaWorld Orlando’s biggest-ever attraction expansion, Antarctica - Empire of the Penguin, opening spring 2013.

Through the years, SeaWorld Orlando has taken guests to far-flung corners of the globe, immersing them in the character and feel of exotic places and introducing them to unique worlds of adventure.

A year-and-a-half from opening at SeaWorld Orlando, details are few. For now, SeaWorld Orlando’s Antarctica will stay as mysterious as its namesake continent. “Only SeaWorld and its parks can take you on these journeys or bring these experiences to you,” said Prather. “We’re excited about what the future holds for our parks and our fans.”

Legoland Florida Is getting a new Ford !

This life-sized Ford Explorer SUV, created by Ford for display at Legoland in Florida, was created by 22 designers using 380 000 Lego bricks. It weighs 1203kg and is supported by a 348kg aluminium base.

"We're less than a month from opening and the anticipation level is incredibly high," Legoland Florida General Manager Adrian Jones said in a press release. "This is the only park of its kind in the world built exclusively for kids ages 2 to 12, and it will be a total departure from anything families with young children have seen before. It's a completely immersive experience, engaging kids' imaginations and their sense of adventure through interactive play."

The Power Trip Coaster opened at Fun Spot USA family entertainment center in Kissimmee, Florida. The Zamperla spinning mouse coaster was relocated from Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven. The name for the ride originates from the Power Trip energy drink who’s a sponsor of the new coaster. The 42-foot tall wild mousecoaster has a top speed of 29 miles-per-hour and features individual four-passenger spinning cars. Fun Spot USA placed the coaster along Highway 192.

Discovery cove's new Grand Reef opens today

Today is the opening of Discovery cove's new Grand Reef. The 2.5-acre artificial reef will be home to about 125 species of sea life, including rays, sharks and urchins. Guests will be able to swim and snorkel there.

Discovery Cove, which opened in 2000, is a limited-admission park typically capped at about 1,000 guests per day. Visitors, who spend all day in the tropical setting, have the option of swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, and interacting with birds.

The new Grand Reef underwater walking tour called SeaVenture, where guests will don diving helmets for upclose adventures with some sealife Will be available later this summer.

They’ve been used to create everything from sea serpents and soaring cathedrals to likenesses of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. But when more than 50 million LEGO® bricks are fully assembled in Central Florida this October, they’ll produce the most stunning creation yet – LEGOLAND® Florida.

Inspired by the ubiquitous LEGO brick, dubbed “Toy of the Century” by Fortune Magazine, the new 150-acre theme park will cater to kids ages 2 to 12 with more than 50 family-focused rides, shows and attractions, and a breathtaking botanical garden.

Just 45 minutes west of Disney and a 45-minute drive east from Tampa, LEGOLAND Florida rests along the shores of Lake Eloise in the city of Winter Haven. Guests will experience 10 easy-to-navigate and highly-themed zones:

The Beginning serves as the park’s entry and features the Island in the Sky, a 100-foot rotating platform ride that offers a 360° view of the entire p ark. Also found here are The Big Shop – one of the largest LEGO retail stores in the world – and The Market Restaurant, which includes a coffee shop with freshly baked pastries, espresso, milk, juice, fruit and yogurt, as well as freshly prepared, healthy family meals served throughout the day.

Fun Town offers families a firsthand look at how LEGO bricks are made from factory to finish. This zone is also the location of a two-story Grand Carousel with LEGO-themed horses and the Fun Town Theater, a 4D movie center that seats 700 and shows three different 4D movies throughout the day. Fun Town also features the Studio Store which sells licensed LEGO products.

Castle Hill is inspired by all things medieval and takes kids back to a time of knights, princesses and dragons. Major attractions include The Dragon, an indoor/outdoor steel roller coaster that offers a hilarious, behind-the-scenes view of life within the enchanted LEGOLAND Castle; and The Royal Joust where kids can storm the castle riding LEGO-themed horses and challenge other riders in a simulated joust.

Miniland USA is the heart of every LEGOLAND Park, and home to eight remarkably themed areas that represent miniature versions of landmarks found throughout the United States.

Florida. This version of the Sunshine State spans the entire state from Mallory Square in Key West to antebellum mansions in the Panhandle. Land of Adventure entices adventurers of all ages to explore this fun-filled zone. Major attractions include Coastersaurus, a wooden coaster that curves and dips in and around a lifesized LEGO brick dinosaur; Lost Kingdom Adventure, a spectacular, Egyptian-themed dark ride that lets guests fire laser blasters and navigate an ancient ruined temple in all-terrain roadsters; and Safari Trek which explores the wilds of Africa and features amazingly life-like LEGO animals.

XTreme is the most “intense” zone in the park. Here courageous youngsters and daring adults will brave the LEGO TECHNIC® Test Track Coaster where they’ll harness the power of acceleration, braking and maneuverability as they race a life-size LEGO TECHNIC vehicle along a wildly twisting track. This area is also home to AQUAZONE® Wave Racers, which lets riders zip in and out of waves as they dodge kid-powered water blasters on their own LEGO jet skis.

LEGO City is the perfect place for youngsters to live out their dreams in a scaled-down town created just for them. At Driving School (and its counterpart Jr. Driving School), youngsters from ages 3 to 13 get to drive their own car, navigate roads and earn a commemorative driver’s license. Other major attractions include Boating School, a fun-filled ride that allows kids to captain their own mini-vessels; Flight School, a suspended rollercoaster that simulates the thrill of flight; and the LEGO City Rescue Academy, where families compete with one another in fire and police vehicles to be the first to put out a simulated “blaze” and save the day.

Imagination Zone is the most hands-on section of the park, emphasizing exploration and creation. The zone is home to several of the most visually exciting LEGO models in the world, including a giant replica of Albert Einstein’s head. The Imagination Zone is where guests can build a LEGO car they can test against the competition on the digitally timed track; or build and program cutting-edge, computerized LEGO MINDSTORMS® robots. It’s also home to Kid Power Towers, where kids and parents hoist themselves up to the top of a tower to get a great view of the entire park, then enjoy a fun “free-fall” to the bottom.

DUPLO® Village is an ideal area for the youngest set who get to fly a plane, drive a car or explore a whole town designed with their height in mind. The little guys call all the shots here on Big Rig Rally, Granny’s Jalopies and the Junior Fire Brigade where tots become voluntary firemen and work together to extinguish “flames.”

Pirate’s Cove rests along the picturesque shores of Lake Eloise, but alas, has been taken over by a host of swashbuckling LEGO “mini-fig” pirates who star in a live-action, water-stunt show that will bring families nose to nose with all the action.

In addition to the 10 zones, LEGOLAND Florida has taken great care to preserve the soul of the park – the historic gardens established on the grounds of its Cypress Gardens predecessor more than 75 years ago. The setting has been restored to its pristine condition, and the collection of native plants, including azaleas and camellias, has been reclaimed and combined with a range of exotic species to create a horticultural masterpiece. And still standing sentinel in the garden is the vast Banyan tree that was planted as a seedling in 1939.

Star Wars Weekends 2011

The 501st Garrison will be participating in SWW at Disney's Hollywood Studios on May 20-22 & 27-29, June 3-5 & 10-12. They have also extended the invitation to the Rebel Legion who will also be participating. Members from both groups will be coming not only from all over the United States but around the globe as well. It is a time to celebrate the story of one of the most popular Sagas of all time. This is definitely one not to be missed with the re-opening of the new and improved Star Tours ride. Be sure to show your support to the Light and the Dark Sides of Force.

Based on the Star Wars films, Star Tours will take Walt Disney World Resort guests to multiple Star Wars destinations where they will interact with characters from throughout the Saga. And it will all be in 3-D.

With eye-popping 3-D digital filming, a dramatic musical score and motion simulator-based technology, guests will be immersed in the Star Wars galaxy like never before on a theme park attraction. Walt Disney Imagineering worked with Lucasfilm, Ltd. and Industrial Light & Magic – the groundbreaking visual effects division of Lucasfilm – to bring the out-of-this-world attraction to life.

Star Tours, which had thrilled Disney Parks guests since the 1980s, was “powered down” at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2010 so Imagineers could begin work on the new attraction.

In a new twist, guests may be able to enjoy the attraction multiple times without ever experiencing the same adventure. More than 50 story combinations are possible for guests to experience aboard Star Tours.

Just as the Star Wars films immerse movie-goers in storylines that keep them on the edge of their seats, Star Tours will feature multiple stories and scenarios that will hurtle park guests throughout the Star Wars galaxy. And all of the storyline’s twists and turns will be random, affording guests the chance to ride the attraction multiple times.

Whether it’s a battle with Darth Vader and his legion of stormtroopers or a plea from Princess Leia to help her save the Rebellion, guests will find themselves in the middle of the action – literally – in the 3-D, multi-sensory attraction.

Entering the attraction queue area, Star Tours guests walk into a bustling spaceport. The famed Star Wars droid duo, C-3PO and R2-D2, greet them as the Starspeeder 1000 is prepped for service. Anthony Daniels, the voice of C-3PO and the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars Saga, reprises his role as the golden protocol droid. Daniels worked with Walt Disney Imagineering to record new dialogue for the attraction. Guests also are introduced to AC-38, a hotshot droid pilot known simply as “Ace,” and Aly San San (voiced by actress Allison Janney), the “spokesbot” for the spaceport.

After winding through the spaceport, guests board the Starspeeder 1000 spacecraft and prepare for Star Tours Flight #1401. Through a series of mishaps, however, C-3PO finds himself in the pilot’s seat instead of Ace, and it’s up to him and R2-D2 to navigate their passengers through the galaxy. However, the tyrannical Empire is out to stop the Starspeeder at all costs. C-3PO and R2-D2 take the controls and try to outwit and outrun the Imperial forces and a galactic bounty hunter hired to pursue the spaceship and its passengers.

Utilizing the 50+ random story combinations, the Starspeeder then embarks on a wild trip through the galaxy, visiting several planets made famous in the Star Wars films. Among the locations that might provide haven from the Empire’s pursuit are the icy planet of Hoth, the lush jungles of Kashyyyk and the underwater Gungan world of Naboo. And along the way guests may encounter Star Wars characters that offer to help (or hinder) their journey, including Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Darth Vader and Boba Fett. “Skytroopers,” a legion of stormtroopers created just for the Star Tours attraction story, might even join in the chase.

Once again, Jedi Mickey and Princess Leia Minnie will be joined by some of the brightest stars from the saga. Celebrity Hosts for the event this year are James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars). Ashley will host "Clone Wars: Behind the Force," a closer look inside the popular animated TV series. James will present another event-first: he will star in a one-man show that showcases some of the many voices he has performed throughout his career, including those from The Clone Wars.

Weekend I (May 20th-22nd)
Opening weekend will kick off the month-long event in grand fashion, as fan favorite Anthony Daniels, who brought C-3PO to life and is the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars saga, will make a golden return to the event. Daniel Logan, who played young Boba Fett in Episode II and The Clone Wars animated series will attend. Dave Filoni, the talented artist and supervising director of The Clone Wars, also will be a special celebrity guest for Weekend I.

Remodeled Lego store at Downtown Disney reopens!

The newly remodeled Lego Imagination Center reopened yesterday. The store is much larger and features many new Disney Lego sculptures..

As you can see above, a large model of Maleficent in her dragon form is on the east side of the store. A very brave Lego man on horseback is ready to fight. Let’s start with a video showing some of the highlights before we go into the detailed photos.

Just on the other side of Maleficent is a play area. It’s about the same as it was before but on the other side of the store. The slide and clubhouse are gone, but there’s still a track to race your creations with wheels.

Facing the lake, and Brickly the Sea Serpant (who will be getting spruced up soon but isn’t leaving) is a model of Buzz and Woody from Toy Story, blasting off.

Snow White gives Dopey a kiss on the head as their furry friends stand by.

The rest of the dwarves are near by, working at their mine.

Most of the inside of the store is the same as before, but with much more space. The inside is lacking large sculptures except for this one of Woody. But Buzz is supposed to join him tomorrow and a full-size Lightning McQueen from Cars will be arriving soon.

NASA's 2nd Annual Lunabotics Mining Competition

The Lunabotics Mining Competition is a university-level competition designed to engage and retain students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). NASA will directly benefit from the competition by encouraging the development of innovative lunar excavation concepts from universities which may result in clever ideas and solutions which could be applied to an actual lunar excavation device or payload. The challenge is for students to design and build a remote controlled or autonomous excavator, called a lunabot, that can collect and deposit a minimum of 10 kilograms of lunar simulant within 15 minutes. The complexities of the challenge include the abrasive characteristics of the lunar simulant, the weight and size limitations of the lunabot, and the ability to control the lunabot from a remote control center.

Amazing Photos! Infrared Images of Elephants at Night

Infrared (IR) photography is a valuable tool in examining the thermoregulation systems of animals.

In these images, taken at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay each color represents a different temperature, so we can see what parts or areas of animals and their environments are cooler, or warmer, than others.

That helps us to learn about how animals regulate their body temperature.

Elephants don’t sweat or pant the way that many mammals do. They are “heat-storers,” whose core body temperatures can rise as much as 11 degrees Farenheit in a day.
What do these Infrared photos show us?

By watching how our elephants shed excess heat into the environment at night, and how they cool-down by trunk-bathing, dusting, shade-seeking, swimming, or ear-flapping during the day, we’re gaining valuable insight into this important aspect of mammalian behavior and biology.

What are the long-term plans for the use of these photos?

With our research collaborators, Dr. Esther Finegan and her graduate students from the University of Guelph (Ontario), we currently have several research projects at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay well underway with elephants, rhinos, and hippos, which should soon yield important scientific publications. In addition to increasing our knowledge of these species, there may be insights pertinent to zoo exhibit design and animal management strategies.

1,000 and Counting!

Around SeaWorld Orlando, this loggerhead sea turtles is known as "Mr. 1,000."

He was brought to SeaWorld in September 2010 by the Sea Turtle Preservation Society of Brevard County after he was found in the wild, suffering from "lockjaw." When he arrived at SeaWorld, he weighed only 72 lbs. Now, after months of hands-on care and TLC by SeaWorld's experts, he weighs over 100 lbs and on March 11 was returned to the waters off Cape Canaveral National Seashore to once again tackle life in the wild.

He's the 1,000 sea turtle to be returned to the wild by the team of turtle experts at SeaWorld Orlando.

Since SeaWorld Orlando's sea turtle rescue program began in 1980, more than 1,530 sea turtles have been cared for by the park's vets and animal team. Each sea turtle was rescued by the staff or brought to the park due to cold stress, injuries from nets, fishing line and hooks, ingestion of trash such as plastic bags, boat strikes, natural causes and most recently, oil contamination.

The team's success rate in caring for turtles with such a wide variety of injuries is amazingly high: 68% of the turtles brought to SeaWorld in the past 30 years have been returned to the wild.

What should you do if you find an injured, orphaned or ill animal?

First, don’t approach the animal – be safe and keep your distance. Next, contact your local wildlife agency and be prepared to detail the animal’s exact location and its condition.

Orlando Eye Coming to I-Drive

What kind of view will the Orlando Eye deliver when it's built?

The giant observation wheel planned for International Drive is supposed to rival the world-famous London Eye. But will the view from an Orlando Eye rival the well-known panorama provided by its English counterpart?

Turns out you can see almost everything in Central Florida from 425 feet up in the air above I-Drive — from a tiny version of Spaceship Earth in Epcot to the downtown skyline to the OUC power plant partway to the Space Coast.

But you can't see any of it particularly well.

The iconic images that visitors associate with Orlando — Walt Disney World's Cinderella Castle, for example, or Universal's roller coasters — are mere points on a flat horizon when viewed from high above the site chosen for the Orlando Eye, a vacant lot that once held the Mercado shopping-and-dining complex.

An Orlando Sentinel reporter and photographer took a helicopter flight recently to gauge the view from above the Mercado property on a blue-sky day.

The trip revealed pleasant views of nearby lakes and a surprising amount of greenery. From the sky, the highways and main roads clogged with tourists day and night look a bit more picturesque. And there's a postcard-perfect view of the Orange County Convention Center's newer, North-South Building — the more striking north end that most tourists miss from International Drive.

But there are also lots of big, flat, dull rooftops and parking lots, such as the sprawling Lockheed Martin Corp. complex that predates the arrival of Disney and the development of a tourist corridor.

The Orlando Eye is part of a proposed retail-and-entertainment development, to be called "I-Walk Orlando," that is supposed to rise from the Mercado's ashes about a mile north of the convention center.
It's not the first giant wheel proposed for the I-Drive area.

In 2008, a company called Great Wheel Corp. announced plans for a similar attraction just south of the county-run center, near the intersection of Interstate 4 and the BeachLine Expressway. But that project never got off the ground.

This time, the planned wheel has a powerful partner: the world's second-largest attractions operator, Merlin Entertainments Group. Merlin already operates the London Eye, which, perched on the banks of the River Thames in the heart of England's famed capital city, provides those who ride its giant cars a bird's eye view of such landmarks as Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.

"They're the rising star in our industry right now," said John Gerner, managing director of Leisure Business Advisors, an attractions-consulting company in Richmond, Va. "That's a plus in the situation."

When it comes to observation platforms, location is key, Gerner said. Generally speaking, he said, a successful attraction offers views of a natural wonder such as Niagara Falls, which can be viewed from several different towers, or a human achievement such as New York City, best viewed from the Empire State Building in midtown Manhattan. Some attractions offer visitors both, such Seattle's Space Needle, which has sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Mount Rainier as well as the city's striking downtown and waterfront.

Those climbing aboard an observation wheel in Orlando, Gerner said, are "going to be looking for the manmade attractions that they're familiar with, starting with Disney and Universal."

"In addition to that, you have some nice scenic beauty," he said.

But seeing Orlando's key attractions from 425 feet above the heart of International Drive is a bit deflating, at least without the use of binoculars. The Epcot dome is recognizable but unimpressive at such a distance, and with just a slight haze on the horizon, the Magic Kingdom's castle is all but indistinguishable.

Merlin said it is in the early stages of planning the attraction and still has "a lot of work to do" on the final experience, including mapping the view. But the company said it expects the I-Walk location to be a great one for an Orlando Eye.

"At 425 feet high, it will be almost as high as the London Eye and will give magnificent views of the area surrounding Orlando — we will be detailing this nearer the time of opening," Sally Ann Wilkinson, a Merlin spokeswoman, said via e-mail. "As well as the view itself, the attraction will, for example, almost certainly include interactive capsules that will bring the viewing experience alive through film/facts and images for the millions of guests we expect to welcome each year."

In addition to Disney and Universal, famous landmarks will include Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building, one of the largest buildings in the world, said Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp National Developments, one of three companies involved in the observation-wheel venture.

Gerner said that judging such views, and balancing them against the price of admission, is a subjective experience.
"It's in the eye of the beholder as far as the 'wow' factor," he said after looking at aerial photographs taken by the Sentinel during its helicopter flight. "At least you can see Disney in some way, and that's a definite plus."

Universal Orlando ~ Up for Sale?

ORLANDO, Fla. -- One of Central Florida's biggest attractions may be sold.

The Blackstone Group, which owns 50 percent of the park, is offering up its stake. Blackstone first offered its share to NBC Universal, which owns the other half of the park.

If NBC Universal does not accept the offer, Blackstone could market the theme park to other companies. NBC Universal has until mid-June to decide whether or not to buy out Blackstone.

If the parks were to come under ownership other than by NBC Universal, it could bring some of the theme parks' licensing agreements into question.

Financial documents reveal that Universal Orlando has taken steps to ensure that licensing for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter would continue even if the park is no longer owned in part by NBC. However, if a new owner were not to follow specific rules, the license could be terminated by Warner Bros., which owns the Harry Potter franchise.

Universal Orlando also said this week that park attendance skyrocketed again in the final quarter of last year, increasing by 46 percent. Year-to-year, the parks said attendance was up more than 50 percent.

Robert Niles, editor of Theme Park Insider, said Universal Orlando is as valuable as its ever been.

"Blackstone kind of has Universal in a barrel here," Niles said. "Harry Potter's really boosted the attendance and the profit and the visibility of the Orlando resort."

Niles said it isn't likely that NBC Universal would let Blackstone start shopping with park to third parties.

"Universal Orlando has become too valuable to NBC Universal to have any risk of losing control of the property. They've really to to step up to the plate here and find way to accommodate Blackstone."
Niles said it is likely that NBC Universal will either try to buy out Blackstone completely, or provide them with a better incentive to stay.
"This is an opportunity for Universal to claim complete control of the resort…something they've not had up until this point," Niles said.
With the increased attendance from 2010 also came a big raise for the CEO of Universal City Development Partners, the name for the corporation that operates the parks.

In 2009, John Sprouls made $282,000, SEC documents show. But in 2010, Sprouls received $1,258,355. The increase was largely to more than $1 million in incentive pay, based on the parks' long-term growth plan.

Destroyed in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 and stitched back together seven years later by tornado survivors in Greensburg, Kansas, The National 9/11 Flag is a living testament to the resilience and compassion of the American people. It is the modern day version of The Star Spangled Banner. Disney Parks introduced a new character, Duffy the Disney Bear.

Duffy who has been a fixture at Tokyo DisneySea for more than six years, is a teddy bear belonging to Mickey Mouse. He even resembles his owner. Duffy's face is shaped like Mickey's, he has Mickey heads on his paws and he has a very unique birthmark on his hip.

You can meet Duffy and have your picture taken with him, as well as purchase Duffys dressed up in holiday attire for Christmas, Easter and other special occasions, such as birthdays and graduations. You can snack on special Duffy-themed treats, and the Kidcot mask program at Epcot will change to a unique Duffy mask that you can take from country to country to color, decorate and receive Duffy stamps.

Saturday night, October 16, 2010, we welcomed the 27th killer whale calf into our family. It was the 16th born at SeaWorld Orlando.

The 7-foot-long, 350-pound baby is the seventh calf for mom Katina, who instinctively assisted the baby whale to the surface for its first breaths moments after birth.

“It’s a terrific day for all of us,” said Kelly Flaherty-Clark, curator of animal training. “Katina is an experienced mom and she appears to be bonding quickly with her baby.”

Busch Garden's - Walkabout Way

Busch Gardens Tampa recently announced that a new area dedicated to Australian animals will is now open. Walkabout Way features kangaroos and wallabies and you’ll have the chance to pet and feed them, too!

The new area is located in the park’s Bird Gardens. There, you’ll meander down a sidewalk with kangaroos on either side of you behind a wooden fence, and wallabies potentially hopping right along your pathway.

Throughout the day, you can also hand-feed the animals. There will be scheduled feedings a few times each day. For $5, you get a cup of food and can have the animals feeding right out of your hand. But note, the area is for ages 5 and older. In addition to the roos and wallabies, Walkabout Way will also include other Australian species, including magpie geese and Australian black swans. There’s also the Kookaburra’s Nest, a free-flight aviary in Walkabout Way that will feature -- what else --kookaburras!

An education station there offers up-close encounters with the park’s animal ambassadors, ranging from Australian parrots, a tawny frogmouth, cockatoos, among other exotic animals that share an important message of conservation.

SeaWorld Rescues 16th Manatee in 2010

On Monday (5/17/2010), SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team successfully rescued from a canal in Satellite Beach, FL an 8-foot manatee which had most likely been struck by a boat.

Currently, she is resting in our Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation where animal care specialists are treating her with antibiotics and provided fluids for nourishment.

This year alone, SeaWordl's team has rescued 16 manatees and have returned 10 back to the wild.

Baby Lemurs Born at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed two endangered baby red-ruffed lemurs on April 21. The babies can be viewed by guests in Jambo Junction, where they reside with their mother and father, Maditra and Bozeny.

The babies are the first lemurs to be born at Jambo Junction, home to the parks’ animal ambassadors, since Maditra and Bozeny arrived as babies three years ago. Lemurs are a species of primate, and reach sexual maturity between 2 and 3 years old.

The sex of the babies has yet to be determined, but they are developing well overall, according to trainers. They are getting braver each day, and exploring their habitat under the watchful eye of Mom and Dad. They currently weigh about 300 grams or a little more than half a pound; lemurs average about 80 grams, or .17 of a pound, at birth. They grow to be about 8 to 10 pounds.

All species of lemurs are native to the island of Madagascar. Red-ruffed lemurs are one of nearly about 50 lemur species. Busch Gardens is home to five lemur species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considers all lemurs endangered. Lemurs are endangered largely due to habitat destruction. Their forests are destroyed for their wood and to grow agricultural crops.

Lemurs play an important role in the ecology of Madagascar as seed dispersers. The seeds can then grow into new plants, which is important since the forests of Madagascar are being destroyed at a very high rate. However, they cannot disperse enough seeds to match the rate of forest destruction.

Captain EO is returning to Epcot!

It’s official: Captain EO is returning to Disney World. The 17-minute 3-D film featuring Michael Jackson will re-debut July 2 at Epcot, where it played from 1986 to 1994.

Captain EO will play in the Honey, I Shrunk the Audience building in Epcot’s Future World for an indefinite amount of time, although Disney officials said Tuesday that Honey is expected to return eventually.

There has been a movement for the revival since Jackson died unexpectedly last year. The film, directed by Francis Ford Coppolla, already has been brought back to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. , and has start dates in Disney parks in Paris (June 12) and Toyko (June 30).

Public demand played a role in the comeback.

“It’s certainly rooted in guest feedback,” says Disney World spokesman Rick Sylvain. Response at Disneyland, where EO has been playing since February, has been “overwhelmingly positive,” he says.

The film as a futuristic, Epcot-y feel with its space warrior theme. Jackson plays the title character. Other recognizable actors include Anjelica Huston as “the Supreme Leader” and Dick Shawn as “Commander Bog.” (Shawn died in 1987.) One of the captain’s alien crew is a flying sidekick called Fuzzball.

It features two songs by Jackson: “We Are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me.”

Walt Disney World said this afternoon that it has decided to offer free admission to travelers stuck in Orlando, as flights to and from Europe continue to be canceled because of an erupting volcano in Iceland.

Disney said it will offer one-day park hoppers on both Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The complimentary passes will also include admission to Disney’s two water parks.

Guests seeking the ticket will have to show a canceled plane ticket or expired boarding pass and a photo ID. Disney says it will also waive its $14-per-day parking charge.

SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment is offering free one-day admission to any United Kingdom, Irish or Continental European tourists stranded in Florida due to the interruption in international air travel caused by Icelandic volcanic ash.

The offer is valid starting Saturday, April 17, 2010 at SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica in Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Stranded tourists must present to the parks' front gate Guest Services window a valid return airline ticket from Wednesday, April 14, 2010 through Wednesday, April 21, 2010 or until normal flight schedules resume.

Now through January 4th, 2010. Guests can now bask in the glow of one of the most popular holiday traditions at Disney's Hollywood Studios™. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights on the Streest of America is a breathtaking seasonal display featuring millions of glittering lights. Entire buildings are blanketed in sheets of multi-colored lights, and thousands more lights form twirling carousels, heavenly angels, and even Santa and his reindeer. Approximately every 10 minutes, the lights dim, and then dramatically spring to life - dynamically choreographed to traditional holiday music.

Guests can see the trees, spinning carousels, 3-D and motion based displays now through January 4, 2010. They'll delight in the flying angels, toy soldiers and giant Santa Claus light creations all strung along the high-rise backlot cityscape. Some nights, if they truly believe in holiday magic, the show is capped off with an enchanted flurry of snow.

This festival display of lights and sparkling holiday bulbs was designed by Arkansas businessman and philanthropist Jennings Osborne. This tradition began 20 years ago when Jennings strung 1,000 red lights as a Christmas gift to his daughter, Breezy. Soon their 22,000 sqare-foot home was covered in millions of lights. On July 16, 2009, astronauts Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11) Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) Al Worden (Apollo 15) Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14) and Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and mark the opening of a new exhibit at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Rarely seen publicly before, the Apollo artifacts in the new exhibit include a rare collection of space suits and other gear used by the Apollo moonwalkers to explore the lunar surface during space walks, featuring Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard’s space suit.

Slip Slidin' Away to Blizzard Beach

Disney legend has it that after a freak winter storm blanketed the area with snow, a team of astute real estate developers decided they had the opportunity to open Florida's first (and only)ski resort. When temperatures returned to normal, the powdery snow turned to slippery slush. Not to be deterred, the developers (spying an alligator sliding down the slopes) turned lemons into lemonade and transformed their ski resort into Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park, the coolest water park anywhere! Slalom courses, bobsled and toboggan runs became downhill waterslides. The chairlift carried swimmers instead of skiers. The ski jump became the tallest, fastest water slide in the nation.

Made the cycle yesterday at Universal Studios and was pleased to see visible, vertical progress on its Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit roller coaster, which is scheduled to open this spring. It's going to have impact on the landscape, for sure, with that reddish rail and bright yellow supports visible from the far side of Universal CityWalk. Here are a few pictures.

This looks to be bumpy ride so all you coaster enthusiasts get your rear ends ready because this is going to be one long summer!

Universal Mardi Gras - 2009

Universal Orlando has announced its lineup of entertainers for this year's Mardi Gras celebration, which kicks off Feb. 7. There's a twist to the scheduling. Instead of the usual Saturdays-only routine, one Sunday (Feb. 14) and one Friday (March 27) has been added to the mix. The event runs through April 18 at the Universal Studios theme park.

UPDATE: Where will these concerts be held, you might ask. I did. After all, the usual "boneyard" location has spent a good deal of time behind construction walls for months. Here's the park's official stance: "Universal Orlando will debut a new, permanent live-performance venue during this year's Mardi Gras season. More details, along with the venue's opening date, will follow soon." So they have a plan, but won't give dates yet. Stay tuned.

Anyway, the diverse list of performers is includes an American Idol winner, country artists, back-in-the-day acts, rap and pop.

Walt Disney World loves a parade and asks you to celebrate!

The afternoon parade at Magic Kingdom has a new name and new elements that dovetail with Disney's marketing campaign What Will You Celebrate?

The Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade, which debuted last Friday, isn't a drastic departure from its predecessor, Disney Dreams Come True Parade. Some floats are redecorated a bit, some are completely unchanged in appearance but with different characters aboard.

Here's what's new:

*The parade makes three "show stops" along the route for performances. The first one is along the straight stretch of Frontierland. At the second stop, the performers reach from Cinderella Castle to midway down Main Street, and the third stop goes from the hub at the front of the park back up Main. (Stand in key spots along the Main drag and see the front of one stop plus the rear of the next one without moving.)

*The songs are now "Celebrate a Dream Come True" and "Celebrate You." The latter is used in Disney's current television spots, and a pop version was recorded by High School Musical actor Corbin Bleu and performed in the telecast of Disney's holiday parade last month.

*Snippets of Disney movie themes have been incorporated into the parade soundtrack. For instance, when Mary Poppins floats by, you hear bits of "Chim Chim Cheree" and with Peter Pan and Wendy, "You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!" is in the air.

"We think it makes it a little more Disney," says Reed Jones, director of creative development for Walt Disney World Entertainment, who led the creation of all show elements.

*There are 101 cast members in the production -- 60 of them are dancers. They display great stamina, and when they aren't hoofing it, they're interacting with children lining the parade route. Which brings up another difference from past parades: All costumed characters, from Mickey to Pooh to Snow White to Chip and Dale, are up on the floats, not at street level and not nearly as accessible. It may be practical, but you might ask, "When did a kid ever line up to get an autograph of a dancer?"

*The grand marshals of the parade are stationed at the beginning of the parade -- not several minutes beforehand as in previous incarnations. In the past, you would see them motoring along and think the parade had started. That false alarm had been a letdown.

"Because of the whole celebration theme, it was a natural fit" to move the grand marshals closer to the activity, Jones says.

*The next addition to the Magic Kingdom celebration: the Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It Street Party, which will promenade up Main Street three times a day, culminating with a party with "dance-along hits," Jones says. The soft opening is scheduled for Feb. 12.

Why is Shamu black and white?

The coloration of killer whales may enhance their ability to hunt. Killer whales are counter-shaded; they are dark on their dorsal surface andwhite on their ventral surface. The dark side blends in with the murky ocean depths when viewed from above. The light ventral side blends in with the lightersurface of the sea when seen from below. The result is that prey have a difficult time seeing a contrast between the counter-shaded killer whale and the environment.

In addition, killer whales have disruptive coloration, a camouflage in which the color pattern of an animal contradicts the animal's body shape. In the flickering, filtered sunlight of the sea, other animals may not recognize a killer whale as a potential threat.

Male giraffe born at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

A male giraffe named Bonsu was born at Disney's Animal Kingdom Sept. 28.

The calf weighed more than 150 pounds and measured more than 6 feet tall, which is a little larger than the average size of a newborn giraffe.

Bonsu is the second calf born to adult female Nikki. Her first calf was Rori, who resides at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. Bonsu is expected to join Rori there in the coming months.

Bonsu is the latest animal birth celebrated at the theme park. Earlier this year, the park welcomed a male elephant named Tsavo in June.

"We are very excited and extremely fortunate for the success of our giraffe breeding program," said Giraffe Keeper Amy Schulz.

DISCOVERY COVE’S FIRST BABY ANTEATER THRIVES WITH HUMAN CARE

It's a girl! Discovery Cove's lesser anteater, Cypress, is now a proud mom to the first baby anteater born at the park. The new bundle of joy was born September 16, via the first c-section our vets have ever done on an anteater. Since then, the little girl has been doing well under the intensive care of our animal training staff.

When the new mom initially showed little interest in the newborn, our animal trainers quickly stepped in to help. They provided the tiny baby additional supplemental bottle feedings around the clock (every four hours) and slowly began introducing the two together. Now nursing full-time, the baby is “tipping the scales” at less than one pound and is more than 5 inches long. She now spends her days nursing, resting and bonding with mom.
